Since man became skilled at the construction of tools to help them with their work, cranes have been used to carry and move objects that otherwise are too heavy for bare hands. There are many types of cranes, each with their own specific uses and load bearing capacities. There are cranes for use in water and on land. There are cranes mounted on wheels that can move great distances and cranes that are fixed and immovable. There are types of cranes with latticed parts, and those without. A lattice-boom truck crane is a movable crane with the boom made of a latticed construction instead of a solid one. Latticed cranes are made of a lightweight high strength alloy, of a thin walled angle steel or tubular steel. It is well designed to take compression loads. This type of crane is similar to the terrain cranes, the crawler cranes, the floating cranes, the railroad cranes, the sidelift cranes and the aerial cranes in that they all have the capacity to be mobile. A truck crane is useful because it can travel on public roads to go to a job or construction site. It is different from the tower crane, the self-erecting crane, the telescopic crane, the hammerhead crane, the level luffing crane, the gantry crane, the overhead crane, the deck crane, the jib crane, the bulk-handling crane, the stacker crane, and the loader crane in that these other cranes are immovable or fixed but have greater load capacity and reach.

However, all cranes were invented for the same purpose. And that is as a tool to help man lift and lower and move about heavy loads.

The mounted crane can then perform its function of loading and unloading all kinds of heavy loads. Generally, a crane is composed of the boom and its components the boom point and the boom guy line. Then there is the jib with its parts the jib guy line, jib strut, and jib back stay. There is the rotex gear, the outrigger, the counterweights, the upper sheave, the lower sheave, the hoist rope, the winding drum, and the slewing platform.
